This seminar includes a foundational introduction to children’s social-emotional development with practical suggestions for assisting the development of self-regulation for young children aged birth to five years.  In the introduction, important terms and contexts are defined including six components of children’s emotional health, including self-regulation.  In section 1, healthy social-emotional development is presented through examination of limbic development for early physiological self-regulation.  In section 2, discussion focuses on the identification of delays in early physiological functioning for young children.  In section 3, descriptions of recommended sensori-motor strategies for improved self-regulation in the areas of sleeping, feeding, muscle tone, activity level, and behavior are introduced.  The content of the seminar is appropriate for families, early childcare professionals, teachers, providers of early intervention services, psychologists, and social workers who work with young children and their families.
